Hi Vis UK DSI ID Toolkit

The need?

One of the aims of Hi-Vis UK is to tackle one of the greatest challenges of DSI or combined vision and hearing loss – the huge number of unidentified older people struggling with the condition.

Often the elderly person does not recognise how much their increasing loss of vision and hearing is affecting them. Likewise, many people whose job is to look after elderly people underestimate the impact of DSI or miss it altogether through lack of awareness or training.

This means far too many older people who acquire DSI are not getting the advice, personal training or support they so need.

What can we do?

Increase awareness
By completing our online distance learning course you now understand how DSI affects all aspects of daily living, eventually cutting off the person with DSI from the world and people around them.
Share your experience of the course with others – give them web address and encourage them to do it!

Increase Identification
Use our simple ID Toolkit checklist to identify more elderly people with DSI.
This will also help them to understand how important it is that their local authority knows about their DSI. Their LA can give them advice, information and assess their need for support to help them manage their DSI.

The Hi-Vis UK ID Toolkit

The toolkit is a set of simple questions about everyday tasks and the common difficulties associated with worsening sight and hearing that affects very many older people.

Who should use the toolkit checklist?

Anyone working with older people e.g. in a care setting as a carer/care worker; or in a health setting – GP practice, hospital, a community pharmacy; or in a local authority setting – a social care officer, social worker; or anyone in an information and advice worker role; a family member or relative, friend or neighbour. Whoever you are and whatever your relationship with the older person you should only use this toolkit with their consent.

How to use the toolkit checklist

Simply go through the key questions with the older person. Use the words in blue italics to help you both explore each question more fully. Follow the “what to do next” advice below.

When you’ve answered all the questions:

If they/you answer YES to 2 or more of questions 1 to 7 AND YES to 2 or more of questions 8 to 14, then it would be a good idea to get some expert advice on understanding and managing their sight and hearing. They/you should think about taking these steps:

See their GP about the health of their ears and their hearing.
See their GP or the local eye clinic at the hospital or their local optician about the health of their eyes and their vision.
Contact the adult services department of their local authority to tell them about difficulties they are having due to their worsening hearing and sight.
If and when they do talk with the local authority, they should consider agreeing to let their local authority record their DSI and how it affects them on the local authority list/register. This last step is really important, but it is up to them.

Their ability to ACCESS INFORMATION: reading their favourite books and magazines, watching TV or using a computer screen, reading those important appointment letters.
Their ability to COMMUNICATE like they used to: relaxing with friends and family, at the shops or cafes, being able to catch everything their GP or Pharmacist says.
